OpenAI suspends ByteDance account because it was using OpenAI’s technology (GPT) to develop its own large language models (LLM). ByteDance wanted to create its own ChatGPT that does not follow OpenAI’s policies.
Imagine that OpenAI is a big library that lends books (AI technology) to companies like ByteDance. ByteDance secretly wants to build its own big library, it even used some of OpenAI’s books (GPT) to learn how to build the library. OpenAI caught the theft and OpenAI suspends ByteDance account.
The era of Artificial Intelligence is going on and the biggest companies are fighting the battle to develop better language models (LLM) on their own to make their work easier. Till now OpenAI and Google have been able to use these big language models and meanwhile a report came out that the account of Chinese internet giant ByteDance has been suspended, although the reason is related to this.
Why did OpenAI suspends ByteDance account?
Microsoft-backed OpenAI immediately suspends the account of Chinese internet giant ByteDance after a report clearly states that TikTok’s parent company is planning to develop its own large language models (LLM) in the generative AI era. OpenAI’s technology (GPT) was being used for this.

The giant ByteDance wants to build AI technology (like GPT) through the API of OpenAI, where we saw the growing development and popularity of ChatGPT and ByteDance was ready to develop its own Large Language Model (LLM).
ByteDance, which owns TikTok, wanted to create its own technology similar to the other Large Language Model (LLM) to compete with OpenAI, however OpenAI did not allow it to succeed and suspended the account midway.
ByteDance named the project “Project Seed”
The Verge released a report citing internal ByteDance documents that “relied on the OpenAI API to develop its core LLM”. In this report it was claimed that all stages of development, including training and evaluation of the model, were carried out under the name “Project SEED”.
In ByteDance case, data desensitization was being used to hide evidence that they had used OpenAI’s technology to develop their own LLM, in order to whitewash everything. While ByteDance has yet to comment on the allegations, Later OpenAI suspends ByteDance account after it became clear it had also used GPT to train its AI models.

An OpenAI spokesperson responded to the incident by saying, “All API customers must comply with our usage policies to ensure that our technology can be used for good.” The use of the API was minimal, and we suspended the account after conducting further investigation. If we learn that their use does not comply with these policies, we will request them to make the necessary changes or terminate their account.” This is what an OpenAI spokesperson says.
However, who ByteDance wants to do all this for, what is its motive behind building AI technology (like GPT) from OpenAI. In June this year, reports emerged that ByteDance was testing an AI-powered chatbot among employees, joining rival Chinese giants Alibaba Group Holding and Baidu in the race to become the Chinese version of ChatGPT. ByteDance wants to create its own large language model (LLM) and become a big player in the market by bringing a new version of it to China.
